Dyslexia Font
People with dyslexia often have difficulty reading
and writing. It is known that font, font size
and font color affect the reading comfort
of dyslexic readers. Christian Boer is a graphic
designer and he himself has dyslexia. To make reading
easier for someone with dyslexia he designed a new
font.
Dyslexia Font
Dyslexics mirror, rotate and interchange letters.
From an aesthetic point of view letters look very
similar. They become alike and that's what
makes things even harder for someone with dyslexia.
The font 'Dyslexie' is designed so that people with
dyslexia make fewer reading mistakes and reading requires less
energy.
What's different?
- the gravity is on the lower half of the
letter, so the letter will not easily be turned upside
down.
- the openings in the letters are bigger,
clarifying the shape of the letters so they seem
less similar. The height of some letters is increased,
which also gives them more 'air'.
- based on the written letter some letters are
angled slightly. This emphasizes the difference
between the letters.
- letters that are easily interchanged are
slightly altered, for example with a long stick or tail.
- punctuation and capitalization are made
bold so start, pause and end of a sentence are
easier to detect.
- the difference in height gives each letter its
own character.
- there's more space between letters and words so
they have more 'air'.
The University of Twente has conducted a study researching the effect
of the typeface. It turned out that dyslexics who use the
Dyslexie font make fewer reading mistakes than with a
standard letter (Arial).
